This is year eight for our homeschool and it’s been such an amazing journey!
Homeschooling is parent-led home-based education. It replaces a child attending a public, private, or charter school. Homeschooling is an age-old educational practice and it’s becoming the new “alternative option” for education in the United States. In 2012, there were 1,773,000 children 5 through 17 years old who were being homeschooled by their parents in the United States. Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and others (i.e., not White/non-Hispanic) make up about 32% of that number.¹ That percentage continues to rise as more families realize that our public schools are no longer providing an academic experience or environment that contributes to the wellness of their student.
I decided to homeschool because I knew I could give my sons the best.
While working full-time as a project manager at IBM, I enrolled my first born into Countryside Montessori at the age of 2. Montessori school proved to be the second best solution for our little learner. I use the Montessori method daily in my homeschool, and highly recommend it for young children.
Top 5 Reasons Montessori is Part of Our School
My two oldest sons attended and graduated from Kindergarten at a Montessori school. They attended a Christian Classical Private School up until 5th and 2nd grades, winning academic and character awards each year. I spent a great deal of time supplementing their education. I requested that my oldest skip a grade due to his mastery of most of his subjects. My request was denied given there was a concern for his social development.
As result, the following became my options for education:
- Find another school that would expand his learning
- Continue supplementing their education while paying tuition
- Homeschool
I knew I could give my sons the best. I understood my sons strengths and weaknesses, had a vision for a holistic curriculum, and could allow them to move forward once they mastered a concept. A healthy environment that empowered them as young brown American citizens would also be beneficial to their growth. I wouldn’t find that any where, but my home. My decision was homeschool.
